Valentine Treats For Your Sweetie

Happy Valentines Day my loves!

Since today is such a special day, I wanted to share some sweet treats that you can make for your sweeties. I have a treat for both our 4-legged friends, as well as for the human kind. We just provide that kind of service around here...lucky you!

So if you are looking for any last minute gift ideas, baked goods are typically loved by all. Just make sure NOT to mix up the puppy vs the human treats. That might not be good :(

The first up is for humans. The original pin actually suggested to bake the cookie dough on a sheet pan, and then cut the cookies into heart shapes with cookie cutters. I was going to do that, and then remembered that I had a heart shaped cookie pan, and thought that might be a little more fun, and easier. I then whipped up an easy frosting recipe and added a few decorations. It was a quick and easy dessert!!

Valentine Cookies
From Living in Yellow
Ingredients:
-- 2 1/4 cup flour (I used gluten free all purpose and it baked up just fine)
-- 1 cup sugar
-- 1 cup butter {2 sticks}, room temperature
-- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
-- 1 teaspoon salt
-- 2 eggs
-- 1 teaspoon baking soda
-- 2 cup valentine colored chocolate chips

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350. Beat the butter until smooth. Stir in the sugar and extract. Beat in both of the eggs. Add in the flour, salt and baking soda, mixing together. Once everything is combined, carefully fold in the chocolate chips.

Cover a 9x15 pan, or heart shaped pan, with waxed paper or aluminum foil. Lightly spray. Pour in the cookie batter, spreading it out evenly. Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown on top. Once cooled, decorate or cut into heart shapes like the original pin suggested.

For the frosting, add 2 cups of powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of softened butter, 3 or 4 tablespoons of milk or almond milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Mix with wire attachment until fluffy. I started out with 2 tablespoons of milk and added a few tablespoons one at a time until it turned the right consistency. I then added some red food coloring and whipped until I got the desired color.

Now for the 4-legged treats. It would be fun to make these with heart shapped cookie cutters, or you can use bone shapped cutters like I did. I have actually made these a few times and the dogs LOVE them!

5-Ingredient Dog Treats
Recipe from Sweet Verbena

Ingredients
-- 1 cup of peanut butter (I used reduced fat smooth peanut butter)
-- 1 cup of milk (I ended up using almond milk since I had that on hand)
-- 1 ripe banana smashed
-- 2 cups of whole wheat flour (do not use white flour)
-- 1 Tbs baking powder

Directions:
Preheat your oven to 375. Mix the peanut butter, milk and smashed banana in a mixer. Be careful not to mix on high as your milk will go spraying out, might have learned this by experience :) Also, make sure that you smash the banana before putting into the mixer. It makes it easier to combine. Then in a separate bowl mix your whole wheat flour and baking powder. Slowly add your dry ingredients, 1/2 cup at a time, to the wet ingredients in the mixer and mix until well combined.

Then spread some whole wheat flour onto your counter top and drop the ball of dough onto the floured surface. You may want to roll the ball around in the flour mixture in order to make it less sticky. Then roll out your dough and cut with fun bone shaped cookie cutters. Then bake at 375 for about 12 - 14 mins. I baked mine for 13 mins. The longer you bake them, and the thinner you roll out the dough, the more crisp they will be.

Then store in an airtight container.

So what are you getting your sweetie for Valentines Day?
