Happy Monday everyone!

I can't believe it, but my furbaby is 12 years old now!

Her birthday was actually last week on Tues, and I might have slightly forgotten about it (I still can't even believe it's May, let alone almost the middle of May), but we made up for it this weekend. It actually worked out much better because we visited with Rick's family, and they are big on birthday's, so it became a big celebration, complete with a homemade pup cake!

Abby, and the rest of the pups, were all about this cake. I think they could smell the peanut butter, which they are obsessed with! So trying to get a picture of Abby with her cake proved to be a little challenging. Rick had to hold her back, and as you can see above, Bryn was trying to sneak in and get it. This is real life folks! Ha!

We ended up cutting the cake into individual pieces and placed them on paper plates. We then took the pups out on the deck since there was a good chance this was going to turn into a complete mess!

The pups loved it, but I'll let this little video confirm the results. We waited until later in the evening to cut the cake, so unfortunately it's a little dark, but you can definitely see Abby was scarfing hers down. It's a very dense cake, so it took a little effort on her part, which I think was perfect for a pet cake and forces them to take a little time to eat it, instead of scarfing in 1 bite. Rick's parent's dog Baxter wasn't impressed at first, bur eventually scarfed it down when Abby tried to steal it from him. But 3 out of the 4 dogs loved it, and I think that sounds like pretty good success.

And for the recipe:

Homemade Pup Cake
Serving Size: 6" round cake

For the Cake:
-- 1 egg
-- 1/4 cup peanut butter
-- 1/4 cup cooking oil
-- 1 tsp vanilla extract
-- 1/3 cup honey (optional)
-- 1 cup shredded carrots
-- 1 cup whole wheat flour
-- 1 tsp baking soda
-- 1-2 tbs of water

For the Icing:
-- 1 individual container of plain yogurt
-- 1 large spoonful of peanut butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix the egg, peanut butter, cooking oil, vanilla extract, honey and shredded carrots. Mix together your flour and baking soda and then mix with the wet ingredients. I then added a little bit of water because it felt very thick, so I thinned it out just a bit. Pour into your greased cake pan (I used a 6" cake pan), and bake for 40 mins at 350. Let cool for 10 mins and remove from the pan to cool on a wire rack.

Once the cake is cool, whisk together the yogurt and peanut butter to desired consistency and spread onto the cake. I then added a little treat and candle for decoration. I kept this in the fridge mainly because of the yogurt until serving. Then watch your pups go nuts!

  1. Happy birthday Abby! Love this and I know Floyd would scarf that cake down too!

  2. This is awesome, thank you for sharing this recipe!! Our pup has a sensitive stomach and can only eat all-natural treats so I think this would work for her! :)

We love hearing from you!
